Principles of Outdoor Education, Monday

Reflect on class each night by posting your thoughts in the following format:

  1. T-What I learned that I never really did before this was to check your clients background.
    EX- The Most exciting part was glancing at the gear, I look forward to seeing more of it later.
    T-Do you think that if you set goals as a leader for your group, that you should either voice those goals or promise them? In the event that you do not succeed. (i.e. if you promise that you are going to summit a mountain then you end up not being able to.)
    Y-This relates to me because I want to end up in the field of Adventure Education.

  2. T I learned that how important icebreakers are to a group.
    Ex: the most exciting part was to meet new people and learn about them.
    T how old was Mr.Macy when he went to Alaska and how did he get picked for the trip leader?
    Y outdoor education relates to me because I do a lot of outdoor things winter an summer.

  3. T-i learned that dynamics are important to understand when leading or following

    Ex-the most exciting part was to learn that there is other ways to teach outside of a classroom such as outdoors education

    T-what are some other common red flags to look for?

    Y-this relates to me because im seriously considering being a teacher and todays leason could help any future teacher

  4. T- I learned the foundations of being a good outdoor education leader.

    Ex- I liked the way you explained the meanings of all the bullet points in the slideshow so we could better understand them

    T- What other trips have you been a leader on?

    Y- This relates to me because I will be a 6th grade leader in April so this is good stuff for me to be learning now

  5. T – I learned that an ice breaker is really good when you have a group who dont know each other.
    EX – what was most exiting today was that i leaned that we would be doing a lot of hands on learning.
    T – What is the main points of ice breakers, and why do they work.
    Y – This class relates to me because when I lead a group or become a teacher i will have to know how to get the kids comfortable in their envierment,fellow peers and with me.

  6. T-I learned that you always have to check everything about your client and learning the different dynamics.
    EX-The most exciting thing was learning all of the different kinds of teaching.
    T-How do you know when to be strict and when not to be?
    Y-This relates to me because I don't want to be the teacher that everyone doesn't like and i want to know when to be strict and when not to.

    EX = It was pretty cool when you showed us the pictures from one of your trips.

    T = What would you teach in outdoor education?

    Y = I've been to cub scout camp. I don't know if that counts though.

    Y: i can be mean and a snot sometimes if someone dose not listen to me so how could i be nicer to the kids

    EX: I am excited to learn more about backpacking and different types of outdoor ed

    T- What is the general length of a backpacking trip? what is the budget for one?

    Y- This relates to me because this summer I want to backpack thru Europe.

  11. T – I learned today than it is very important to know what environment you’re going into. So if I were going into a place with snow I would not want shoes that are below my ankles.
    EX – The most exiting part of today was going over the types of shoes and what worked best in different terrains.
    T –What type of shoes are best for running?
    Y – This class related to me because I go on many hiking trips, and i learned what gear would best suit me in dry or wet conditions.

  12. T-I learned that... well i learned that you should always pack light.
    EX-GEAR! I'm a Huge GEAR junkie so that's always cool.
    T- when you are the TL of a trip should you as the leader distribute all of your group gear and food to your students if they are very very new to hiking and overnights, or should you carry most of it and only distrubute what you think is easy for them to carry?
    Y- This applies to me because I have lead 12+ wilderness trips and 20+ day hikes. I have been a counslor at the Keystone Science School for one full summer and will be doing that for summers to come for probably the next 5 years.

  13. T-I learned about function vs. weight

    EX-The most exciting was looking at the gear and getting a feel for the different gear options

    T-what can you do when you discover you may be carrying more gear than nessiscary?

    Y-This relates to me because I am going on the chaco canyon experintial

    t- That Footwear is the most important part of clothing for hiking
    ex- Ice braker about if you were on a island who would u chose to be on it, 2 people.
    t- Mr.Macy have you ever regret anything when u hike
    y-One time I was hiking and I did not have a good sho and water went throught it
